I dreamed the world... ..with my eyes open... ...but time moves on and then... ...new worlds begin again.... [/blockquote] “Goddamn Eli. I’ll kill that kid.” Jay grumbled, scribbling down on his clipboard that yet another copy of a Bronte had gone missing. He didn’t understand what was with that guy and books about strong women but he appeared to be obsessed, and what was worse, he never paid for anything. He would just take it and a few months later it would appear again. Did he not understand? This was not a library!
The small lycan shook his head, his eyes flicking over the other books and finding that a book of short stories had also gone missing, and he cursed again, wanting to go hunt down that guy and give him a piece of his mind until he remembered Eli’s size and the scary ‘I’ve got nothing to lose’ look in his eyes and thought he had better not. So Jay simply gave up on taking inventory, twisting the ring on his thumb around his finger as he walked to the back office of the shop, deciding he should polish the daggers or something useful like that, since he wasn’t due back at Tony’s until the dinner rush and the bar was quiet until around six. He slapped down the clipboard on his desk and sat in the swivel chair, spinning around in it as he thought about his life up to this point.
It was a rather good one, he must admit, although it would help if someone provided for his future by coming in and actually buying something. He was a master of magical items, a guru of books, a wealth of knowledge at the towns disposal and yet all he seemed to be good for was a drink and being the brunt of everyone’s jokes. Well two could play at that game, the small lycan always readily equipped with wit and sarcasm. All he needed was someone to play with.

It had taken a sleepless night for her mood to calm down enough for a true plan to be formulated. Most of the day before had been spent packing her clothing. She didn’t keep very many possessions with her, and she probably wouldn’t have taken them anyway. By the fall of night, everything that she intended to leave the city with filled a canvas carry bag. That and her shoes, which she only intended to wear for the single journey into the forest.
Now, she found herself outside the bookstore. It was both a necessity, and an undesirable inconvenience. Jay more often than not found a way to get under her skin, but if she was to proceed, she needed a map of the forest. A map that would point out anything she could use as a place to stay, not the sort of map a fuel station would carry. But it meant dealing with Jay. And Jay meant jokes. Bad jokes.
“At least it’s just jokes.” With one hand, she pushed the door open. Her off-black denim jacket overtop a rose-on-blue blouse that she never wore in public bordered the pendant hanging around her neck. The blue jeans with roughed up ends nearly entirely covered her equally roughed up sneakers. It was an odd contrast between her upper and lower self, but at the very least, it wouldn’t draw too much attention to herself from others.
For the most part, she had simply expected the maps to be close to the door. Simply picking one up, looking it over and purchasing it would make her stay there as short as possible. Her hopeful situation didn’t work out at all; none of the few maps she could see from the door covered the forest. “Great. Just stay calm, and remember the fact that you’ll never see him again. And also remember to not tell him that.”
With the most plain of expressions, she wandered further into the store in search of maps. Preferably those of the paper kind, lugging a book around in her arms was highly unappealing in thought alone.

I dreamed the world... ..with my eyes open... ...but time moves on and then... ...new worlds begin again.... [/blockquote] Jay was just playing with some of the new stock of jewelry he had gotten in when the ringing of the bell above the door caught his attention. He looked over to it, catching sight of Thor in the doorway, or so they had always called her online, just to bug her. Well, time for the ‘Jaybird’ to do a little chatting. He finished polishing the silver, looking up every so often to catch what she was looking for, apparently trying to catch sight of the maps on the walls and rolled up in bins on the floor. They were of here and there, some more modern than others, but part of him knew that what she was looking for wouldn’t be a map of the stars nor the famous buildings in Chicago.
No, judging by the mud caked onto her ratty sneakers- which she was rudely tracking in- and the look in her eye he’d guess she was looking for a very different type of map indeed.
“Well look what the cat dragged in.” Jay greeted, placing down the necklace and gliding his way over to him in suave imitation. “Or should I say dog?” Most people didn’t know he was a lycan, but he knew everything in this town, and considering there was no one else in the shop that day, he was hoping not to get punched for announcing his wealth of knowledge.
“What can I do you for, Miss Thor? Oooh, look that rhymed.” He was very proud of himself as he shoved his fingers into the tiny pockets of his tight jeans and rocked back and forth on his heels, awaiting her answer and unaffected by the very nature of her being which seemed to give off a very solid ‘buzz off’ kind of vibe. lyrics: nova vnv nation

Just a hint of a snarl made it through her tightly closed lips. It was exactly what she had expected, and yet it still irked her. Still, she had the advantage of height, if anything. But of course, she couldn’t exactly use that if she wanted to be left alone by the city pack. Just get the map and leave. “I feel like going on a hunt, for a few months. That sort of thing requires a map, the sort of map only you would be... considerate enough to store.” She bit down on her tongue in the most discreet way possible. It was simply exchanging a rather offensive word for a more appealing one, nothing more.
Further along, she reached the geography section. As expected, it was a vast majority of atlases and textbooks. “I might also need something on wolves. Preferably from the fiction section.” There was a definite silliness about reading wolf romance novels in the hope of learning something that could help her with her own situation. But at the very least, it would help avoid boredom while she was out ‘hunting’.
A small shelf with paper maps caught her attention. While the thought of a camping store occurred to her as potentially being more fruitful, she removed a map from roughly the middle of the pile. From a quick glance, it had a few of the details that she needed. Good coverage of the forest area, the locations of ranger outposts and official hunting lodges. The latter wouldn’t suffice her needs, she needed something truly cut off from human influence.
“I think I have what I need.” She folded the map back up and slipped it under her arm. “And on second thought, I’ll pick out the books too. No offence, but I think we have slightly different tastes in fiction.” There wasn’t much she could do about him commenting about her choices. At least, when she bought them.

I dreamed the world... ..with my eyes open... ...but time moves on and then... ...new worlds begin again.... [/blockquote] “Well, don’t you know a way to a man’s heart?” Jay scoffed, his attention going to the collar of his flannel, adjusting it although it had been perfectly fine before. “Callin’ me considerate. What next, am I a really good person? Utterly… ridiculous.” He dismissed the conversation with a wave of his hand but she was already leading her own way to the geography section so he stalked after her in mock imitation of her walk and did a quick turn when he saw she had found the proper stack of maps, sliding his way into fiction.
“What kind of fiction? Little red riding hood fiction? Erin Hunter trying to write about wolves fiction? Incredible failure, by the way, not if they’re lycan.” He fingered the spines of some of the old greats, pondering what type of person she was, because that could determine what type of book she actually wanted, however sometimes people did surprise him. “Trashy books about wolves?” He asked with a raise of one eyebrow, an elfish laughter emitted from his core when she passed him and claimed she needed no more assistance from him.
Jay shrugged his hands up still as if he was caught by the police when he backed to the counter. He twisted his back about, hearing it crack, waiting for his one and only customer to come and pay him. “Why are you taking months to hunt, anyway?” He asked, leaning his elbows against the wooden desktop. “Don’t you appreciate, I don’t know, showering?” He couldn’t make sense of it in his own mind. Sure, Jay himself hated humans, not that anyone knew that he wasn’t one himself, and sure, the wolf part of him would love it if he just took off to live in the woods, but it didn’t seem healthy. At some point, you had to shift back into your human form, you just had to.

Her shoulders shuddered ever so slightly as he laughed. Fortunately, she had moved out of his line of sight in that time. Trashy, hardly fitting. What else was there to read that could possibly interest her? Stories about lycans were either too inaccurate, or else just outright depressing. And she would have no communication access, not because of a lacking signal, but because she wouldn’t be bringing anything to receive such a signal.
After a good few minutes, she had half a dozen small books in her hands, with the map resting on top. His inquiry into her plans as the books settled onto the counter brought another shudder. Did he have to make a point of the fact that humans made a point of showering often? “I’ve already considered that. But thank you, for your concern.” Her lip became trapped tightly between her teeth. Sarcasm seemed to be the only thing Jay understood.
“Look, I won’t be around for a while. That’s all you need to know. Keep the club going; maybe I’ll be back with a few new tricks.” Leaving enough money on the counter to cover her purchase, she reclaimed the books and map. They slipped quite neatly into her canvas bag. “Is there anything else, Jay? Or am I excused?”

I dreamed the world... ..with my eyes open... ...but time moves on and then... ...new worlds begin again.... [/blockquote] Jay glanced at the books, then back to her. “You are very welcome my dear.†He smirked, the corner of his lips pulling up ever so slightly. “You know my every happiness hinges on your well-being.†He had reached for the books, ready to start ringing them up and openly, loudly judging her for every title, having read most books on the subject himself. Yes, he had just reached for the book when with a slam there was money on the desk and the books snatched out from under him. He raised an eyebrow at her, curious as to her impatience. He knew she disliked him, most people did, that was no need to be testy.
“What’s the hurry? You’re the Shaggy to my Rooby-roo. I need you.†He was clearly mocking the entire idea of actually caring where she was going. Sure, he was curious, but of what little he knew of her, she could take care of herself. “Yeah, actually, just one more thing before you vanish into thin air.†He motioned his hands like he was a magician.
“Don’t die. There are too few pure ones in this world, too few who truly embrace what it means to be one of us. It would be a shame to lose you.†That one was serious, at least. He went to the door, pulling it open for her, the bell above chiming, welcoming her to get the hell out of his shop. “You are now excused.†He gave her a flourishing, dramatic bow, and let the door slam behind her on the way out.
“Ah, finally, time for Tony’s.†The strange little man said.
And then he was gone. lyrics: nova vnv nation

Most of what he said flew over her head as the usual jibes and pokes at her temper. It was to be expected, and more importantly tolerated. Chances were that he quite literally couldn’t help himself in that matter. Trying to correct the flaws wouldn’t help at all, and getting mad at him for them would be even worse. Pulling shut the last zip on her bag was more than enough to satisfy her inevitable need to strangle the living daylights out of him.
As she prepared to leave, one of the last things he said caught her off guard. It lacked the sarcastic, light-hearted nature that she had come to expect. At the same time, it reminded her of the risk she was taking. Isolating herself from society in an attempt to merge with the essence of the forest. “I’ll be back, you can count on that.” Once she had left the premises, she felt the door slam behind her. Typical Jay, not wanting to let the emotion grow painfully strong. That was one of the few things she liked about him, for she felt exactly the same way.
“I may just end up missing him if I stay much longer. Now that’s a scary thought.” Once the next car had driven by, she made her run across the road. It wasn’t too far to the forest; the long part would be searching for a place to stay that was well away from any who wouldn’t appreciate her presence. Wolves and humans alike, it wouldn’t do well to offend either of them right off the bat.
